Each year, an award is given for artwork with a Spiritual theme. Spirituality provides a space for people to explore the meaning of life; it invites us into mystery and a dimension of the world beyond the rational. Art is a perfect partner for Spirituality as it can provide the medium for exploration of meaning, mystery and transformation.
Students are invited to reflect on and respond to the Catholic Education Sandhurst Ltd’s theme for the year. This year’s theme is "Behold! I make all things new."
Alternatively, students have taken their inspiration from scripture or religious themes. Using their experience in the modern world, they have created artworks that invite the observer to questions and new understandings.

My artwork shows how our environment can grow back after a bushfire. I used warm colors like red and orange for the background to show the fire, and cool colors like blue and green for the new growth. On the warm side, I painted a burnt tree with fire underneath. On the cool side, I made a new tree growing. This shows that even after something bad like a fire, the environment can become new again.

My artwork has two deers and in the background there are two trees and two mountains. I have added compilations of light and darks. This symbolises the meaning: “Behold I create all things new.” My inspiration behind this artwork is that my grandparents used to own a farm and at the back there was a forest with tall trees. When my dad and I went down to look around we had to be quiet because we didn’t want to scare the deers away. If we were quiet, we could hear the deers running in herds. I have used watercolour and gouache for the moon and clouds. I was inspired by deers for this because I think they are such beautiful animals and I like being amongst the natural environment. In this artwork I have learnt a lot of new skills and I am now a lot more confident in doing watercolours.

The inspiration behind this artwork is about a day my family and I went for a walk around the park and I saw a bird egg on the grass. I picked it up and dropped it in my dads hand so he could put it back in the nest. After my dad put the egg back in the nest and we talked about the birds as we walked. For my artwork I was inspired by nature. I have learned how to make different textures on a canvas, I have really enjoyed painting with acrylic paint.

"My artwork portrays “Behold I create all things new”. I was intrigued when I saw some ducklings follow their mother down the side of the lake in Shepparton. The Mother duck seemed to divert its young away from danger which is very similar to how my parents keep me safe. It is very important to look after our young so that they may have a full and peaceful life. The watercolours challenged me when I was painting the ripples in the water. I tried to get the multiple layers to look more realistic. "

I have used watercolour on the left hand side creating washes and layering colours and on the right I have used markers to also create dark and light shaded effects. I am inspired by nature and the butterfly is an insect that is both beautiful and mysterious. I love my garden at home because when the flowers bloom the butterflies get busy pollinating. Nature is full of amazing things if you take the time to look."

My artwork shows how our environment can grow back after a bushfire. I used warm colors like red and orange for the background to show the fire, and cool colors like blue and green for the new growth. On the warm side, I painted a burnt tree with fire underneath. On the cool side, I made a new tree growing. This shows that even after something bad like a fire, the environment can become new again.

My artwork has two deers and in the background there are two trees and two mountains. I have added compilations of light and darks. This symbolises the meaning: “Behold I create all things new.” My inspiration behind this artwork is that my grandparents used to own a farm and at the back there was a forest with tall trees. When my dad and I went down to look around we had to be quiet because we didn’t want to scare the deers away. If we were quiet, we could hear the deers running in herds. I have used watercolour and gouache for the moon and clouds. I was inspired by deers for this because I think they are such beautiful animals and I like being amongst the natural environment. In this artwork I have learnt a lot of new skills and I am now a lot more confident in doing watercolours.

The inspiration behind this artwork is about a day my family and I went for a walk around the park and I saw a bird egg on the grass. I picked it up and dropped it in my dads hand so he could put it back in the nest. After my dad put the egg back in the nest and we talked about the birds as we walked. For my artwork I was inspired by nature. I have learned how to make different textures on a canvas, I have really enjoyed painting with acrylic paint.

My painting is of a small baby bird on my hand. This is from an experience I had last year whilst away camping with my family. My cousin and I were exploring around the park when we came across some baby birds on the ground who had fallen from their nest. We picked them up and started searching around for their mum. We looked up but we did not see a nest. After looking around for some time we finally found their mother. It was obvious to see how excited she was to see her babies. This was a really fun experience for us. I have used watercolour paint, as it best captures the moment. My message in this artwork is about how we all have a part to play in taking care of God's creations.

For my artwork I have chosen a misty mountain scene with short pine trees as one of the ways to represent new life. The focus of my artwork is an old horse with its foal representing new life. The inspiration for this piece is my horse Jasmine. Jasmine was a horse that was very sick and skinny when we got her. We got her from a friend and have been caring for her ever since. Jasmine is an old horse and she has issues such as bad conformation - (which is how they walk)- as she did not have corrective shoeing when she was young. In my artwork these issues represent old age and death focusing on the foal as the new life of its mother. The message of my piece is that old animals, Humans and plants do not live forever.

It is very important to look after our young so that they may have a full and peaceful life. The watercolours challenged me when I was painting the ripples in the water. I tried to get the multiple layers to look more realistic. "

"My artwork has a girl with a butterfly on her finger and the butterfly is spreading the bright colours across the page. This is a symbol of the message “Behold I create all things new.” I have used lots of bright colours separating the two sides with different mediums to create a brand new effect in my artwork. I have used watercolour on the left hand side creating washes and layering colours and on the right I have used markers to also create dark and light shaded effects. I am inspired by nature and the butterfly is an insect that is both beautiful and mysterious. I love my garden at home because when the flowers bloom the butterflies get busy pollinating. Nature is full of amazing things if you take the time to look."

The Seed of Life

A while ago I tried to grow an avocado plant. I put the seed in a glass and added water. Weeks went past and there was no sign of growth, I was going to give up. But then the world helped me out and my seed started to grow. My artwork is about the Seed Of Life and the message is that you should never give up on the growth or the life of a plant. My artwork is about all things new. Nature and my own experience with growing things at home inspired my artwork. My artwork of a hand pouring water into a bowl with a plant symbolises the world's hand stretching down to help my plant grow and thrive.
