Each year, an award is given for artwork with a Spiritual theme. Spirituality provides a space for people to explore the meaning of life; it invites us into mystery and a dimension of the world beyond the rational. Art is a perfect partner for Spirituality as it can provide the medium for exploration of meaning, mystery and transformation.
Students are invited to reflect on and respond to the Catholic Education Sandhurst Ltd’s theme for the year. This year’s theme is "Behold! I make all things new."
Alternatively, students have taken their inspiration from scripture or religious themes. Using their experience in the modern world, they have created artworks that invite the observer to questions and new understandings.

"In my artwork ""Ember of Presence,"" I've captured a peaceful moment by a fire. At the centre, shaped like a triangle to represent the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, are burning logs. In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, ""Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."" The photo reflects this idea with a cozy fire that is a warm yellow. It invites the viewer to sit by it and shares a message of spiritual comfort. Our own First Nations People have used fire in cultural burns. They know that by removing unwanted or stifling material from the bush floor, healthy new growth will appear. The fire in my photo is like this too. Once the fire dies and the logs are gone, seeds will sprout from the ashes with the next rain. Through the human figure in the background, looking almost as if it is emerging from the fire, I hope to communicate the idea that we can too. When we are at rock bottom, the faith that may have crumbled within us can reignite. We can turn to God like in Isaiah 65:17 'For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; And the former things will not be remembered or come to mind.’"

Metamorphosis Of Identity

For my artwork, I wanted to create a piece that represented and incorporated the theme of identity and contrast, and captured beauty through the unconventional. However, I wanted to explore these themes through animals instead of humans, and wanted them to depict two identities where they felt as though they cannot fully be themself, despite being created by God. I decided to incorporate a snake and a butterfly because I feel as though the animals are contrasted due to their physical appearance/abilities and the environments they live in, and would represent two very contrasted identities. As I worked on my art piece, the idea of including a moon phase came to mind. I believe it symbolizes the passing of time and a reminder of constant change in life. It reflects the concept that God is making all things new, fixing what's broken, and getting rid of imperfections to make things even better. Just as our Catholic traditions are precious and celebrated through Recontextualisation, the process of placing our Catholic Identity into new contexts and allowing new understandings to emerge, the moon phase represents the different journeys one goes through on finding oneself and one's faith, despite the constant change.

"Depicted is the Woman of the Woods. A symbol of regrowth after a fire. This is symbolised in her burnt half, slowly regrowing to match her beautiful natural self. A female form was chosen as ‘Mother Nature’ and feminine traits are often ascribed to nature. Her soft and gentle nature comes across in her gaze, even her burned side carries this to emphasise a positive connection between the destruction and the new life. The spiritual aspect of fire is explored within the piece as well. Many biblical stories feature ashes and fire, such as Ash Wednesday. This spiritual balance of fire and growth is an idea that inspired the artwork. Connecting aesthetic and symbolic aspects to the deeper religious meanings that inspire me. The regrowth is as spiritually significant as the destruction that comes before it. Encouraging change and growth through hardship. The meaning behind the quote itself is facing the world with optimism and open-heartedness, it is God's way of encouraging us to live with the same values and morals he did in life. This connects to the dolphin behind the girl in the artwork as the dolphin resembles the values peace and harmony. For us individuals it is necessary to have a source of strength to use our values effectively and be successful in life. For some people, they can either interpret this as their personal strength or spiritual strength. I chose to use a spiritual example, as who we are is dependent on the nature of our soul and not necessarily all about how we have been nurtured in our upbringing. A similar way you could possibly view this artwork, is considering the girl to be a mask of her true colors. When she walks through life and experiences new things that could involve rock-like obstacles, she is always going to have the power to overcome the challenges with her values of peace and harmony through a higher version of herself. Spiritual power is expected to always be in the background of decision making throughout our lives. "

My artwork titled “Blossoms and Youth” shows the young person who was a new creation in the eyes of god, and the fact that he is heading into his adolescent years god makes new experiences for him to learn from. The flower in the artwork further illustrates the creations of God in the form of flora, it is a freshly bloomed flower and is new to the world and represents the adolescent boy and the flower going through the same process of their life being in the starting process of their lives. It demonstrates the purity in the two main features of the piece; the white touch to the flower also symbolises the purity in the piece. Having the young boy positioned in between two old buildings highlights the contrast between the new creation of god and the old hand-made creations of people. Echuca was built in 1865 and exemplifies the contrast between the building from that time, the boy who was born in 2011 and juxtaposing the even younger rose who would be about 4 to 5 days old. Going through the different stages of life and showing how long god's creations and human creations last compared to each other. This Artwork shows all the new things that have been created in life.

In my artwork, I investigate the idea of rebirth and metamorphosis via Australia's constantly shifting landscapes. The painting depicts the meeting point of the coastal and outback environments illustrating the concept of ‘behold I make all things new’ and the cyclical nature of life. I encourage viewers to consider how different ecosystems coexist, each influencing the other in a never-ending cycle of rebirth by fusing these disparate regions into a single composition. The background is an image of the ocean that I took at Sandy Beach which served as inspiration. The waves constantly reshape the shore symbolising the renewal that comes with water. A dried eucalyptus tree and native plants on the other hand depict the arid Australian outback in the foreground signifying resiliency and regeneration even in adverse circumstances. This contrast highlights how nature has the capacity to transform as evidenced by the dry outback's ability to support new growth despite its apparent barrenness. I combine the dirt-red tones of the outback with coastal blues using acrylic paint to represent the union of two natural forces. Inspired by Ted Dyer my use of depth and movement immerses the spectator in the scene inspiring awe and a sense of presence. Ultimately, my art celebrates the dynamic and timeless beauty of Australia's landscapes which embodies the theme of renewal.

It's not uncommon to feel distant from God or to struggle with motivation and emotional strain, especially as a Yr12 student when there seems to be no time for consistent quiet time with God. No time to reconnect and find renewal. My artwork speaks to those quiet moments were I can seek solace, gain perspective, and find strength to face our challenges. God is always there, even in my most LAZY moments; GOD renews me and gives me strength. This spiritual renewal can help centre my thoughts and emotions. This artwork reminds me that it’s okay to take small steps and be gentle with myself. Each small act of self-care can also be a spiritual act which for me contributes to a greater sense of peace and purpose. “The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need. “He lets me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters. Ascension explores the overwhelming and powerful aspect of a new perspective or beginning for oneself over a new stage of life. To provide the sense of an overwhelming and powerful feeling, I used a range of warm coloured oil paints to create a swirling effect of unity for the phoenix’s wing, contrasting it with a cooler gray temple shape. (The temple represents myself, as a connection to my own culture.) Where the phoenix lingers over the temple. Ascension mirrors the concept of a new perspective and new beginnings in one’s new stage in life. In a sense, creating an overwhelming and powerful effect lingering over ones past version of themselves. In the new perspective or beginning one might find themselves to have new morals, more mature, open minded and have learnt how to have better expectations of themselves from experiences. My work is influenced by how artist Chu Teh Chun depicts harmony between man and nature, however in my work it depicts the harmony and connection between a personal cultural identity and mythological stories.

This work is a resemblance of the concept that nature will always prevail in instances of lack of human intervention. Similarly to ‘Serene Submergence’ my artwork utilises nature and the core belief of a creator God, yet does it through the subject matter of overgrown house plants which have dominated what appears as an aged living space. This references the idea that God’s unique creation of the natural aspects of Earth overpower the material and industrial world once it’s given freedom to flourish as God intended. When considering this, I made visible the contrast between the dullness of the wood furnishing (which was a result of environmental exploitation), and the thriving, prosperous, new growth which endlessly arises from it’s previous restriction. I emphasised the beauty and calm of new, booming growth by implementing warm lighting to create a sense of comfort. In relation to the theme ‘Behold, I make all things new’ I consider this through the way God has created nature, and that he intended it to always grow new life and be restored no matter how restricted it once was. I see the embodiment of the theme through the composition of the overall natural world, and how it was specifically created by God to somewhat resemble God himself characteristically, hence why I correlate them both throughout my artworks.

This overall references the core belief in the relationship between humanity and the natural world, indicated in the book of Genesis during the creation of humans. During this creation, humanity is given the gift of nature and ordered to be the stewards of it, caring for it such as God does. In this context, the water I used to submerge the figure is not only implied as one of the gifts of creation, but is also commonly seen as the Holy Spirit, the form of God in action on Earth. In relation, I have incorporated the use of pastel and vibrant colours which are not typically found in natural settings, in an attempt to replicate a dream-like feeling which can be visualised as a spiritual, sacred setting. When interpreting the theme “Behold, I make all things new”, I consider my interpretation as illustrating the true tranquillity of the intended relationship between humanity and nature, and that if one feels broken, with the assistance of God's presence throughout the environment, can feel restored where once empty and find a newly created perspective to life. .

He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” Revelation 21:5. My artwork is in responds to this powerful quote! It captures a moment of profound renewal and promise. The passage speaks of a vision of a new creation and the assurance that this transformation is both reliable and certain. In my artwork I have tried to show a journey of renewal over time and in different contexts. The colour and use of light reflects the Holly Spirit and the ever steady presence of God. Throughout the three canvases there is change and mystery.

"In my artwork ""Ember of Presence,"" I've captured a peaceful moment by a fire. At the centre, shaped like a triangle to represent the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, are burning logs. In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, ""Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."" The photo reflects this idea with a cozy fire that is a warm yellow. It invites the viewer to sit by it and shares a message of spiritual comfort. Our own First Nations People have used fire in cultural burns. They know that by removing unwanted or stifling material from the bush floor, healthy new growth will appear. The fire in my photo is like this too. Once the fire dies and the logs are gone, seeds will sprout from the ashes with the next rain. Through the human figure in the background, looking almost as if it is emerging from the fire, I hope to communicate the idea that we can too. When we are at rock bottom, the faith that may have crumbled within us can reignite. We can turn to God like in Isaiah 65:17 'For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; And the former things will not be remembered or come to mind.’"

Metamorphosis Of Identity

For my artwork, I wanted to create a piece that represented and incorporated the theme of identity and contrast, and captured beauty through the unconventional. However, I wanted to explore these themes through animals instead of humans, and wanted them to depict two identities where they felt as though they cannot fully be themself, despite being created by God. I decided to incorporate a snake and a butterfly because I feel as though the animals are contrasted due to their physical appearance/abilities and the environments they live in, and would represent two very contrasted identities. As I worked on my art piece, the idea of including a moon phase came to mind. I believe it symbolizes the passing of time and a reminder of constant change in life. It reflects the concept that God is making all things new, fixing what's broken, and getting rid of imperfections to make things even better. Just as our Catholic traditions are precious and celebrated through Recontextualisation, the process of placing our Catholic Identity into new contexts and allowing new understandings to emerge, the moon phase represents the different journeys one goes through on finding oneself and one's faith, despite the constant change.

Woman of the Woods

"Depicted is the Woman of the Woods. A symbol of regrowth after a fire. This is symbolised in her burnt half, slowly regrowing to match her beautiful natural self. A female form was chosen as ‘Mother Nature’ and feminine traits are often ascribed to nature. Her soft and gentle nature comes across in her gaze, even her burned side carries this to emphasise a positive connection between the destruction and the new life. The spiritual aspect of fire is explored within the piece as well. Many biblical stories feature ashes and fire, such as Ash Wednesday. This spiritual balance of fire and growth is an idea that inspired the artwork. Connecting aesthetic and symbolic aspects to the deeper religious meanings that inspire me. The regrowth is as spiritually significant as the destruction that comes before it. Encouraging change and growth through hardship. The idea that hardship is necessary to encourage positive change is one of great importance and as such great care was taken to not demonise the burnt side, as this is the catalyst to inspire beautiful things to grow. The woman is weatherworn, older, wise and beautiful. Fire is a spiritual experience and so is new life. The Woman of the Woods is made new. "

In my landscape painting titled 'Guardian of new beginnings', I chose to paint a peacock as the focal point. The peacock represents the ressurrection and new beginnings. Having a peacock perched above the flowing water with its tail in the water symbolises the cleansing of sins and baptism. The peacock represents sustaining the natural work by pouring energy into the water and fueling nature, reminding us that God is in every living being. In the distance, the trees and mountains remind us of the endless cycle of nature, while the two doves in the sky represent peace, freedom and love. The peacock feathers reflecting in the water shows us that God is always in ourselves. Additionally , the three flowers in the corner have the Catholic Sandhurst 100 year colours.

"This artwork links to the quote; ‘Behold I make all things new,” by flaunting its ability to portray strength through spiritual form. The meaning behind the quote itself is facing the world with optimism and open-heartedness, it is God's way of encouraging us to live with the same values and morals he did in life. This connects to the dolphin behind the girl in the artwork as the dolphin resembles the values peace and harmony. For us individuals it is necessary to have a source of strength to use our values effectively and be successful in life. For some people, they can either interpret this as their personal strength or spiritual strength. I chose to use a spiritual example, as who we are is dependent on the nature of our soul and not necessarily all about how we have been nurtured in our upbringing. A similar way you could possibly view this artwork, is considering the girl to be a mask of her true colors. When she walks through life and experiences new things that could involve rock-like obstacles, she is always going to have the power to overcome the challenges with her values of peace and harmony through a higher version of herself. Spiritual power is expected to always be in the background of decision making throughout our lives. "

Blossoms And Youth

My artwork titled “Blossoms and Youth” shows the young person who was a new creation in the eyes of god, and the fact that he is heading into his adolescent years god makes new experiences for him to learn from. The flower in the artwork further illustrates the creations of God in the form of flora, it is a freshly bloomed flower and is new to the world and represents the adolescent boy and the flower going through the same process of their life being in the starting process of their lives. It demonstrates the purity in the two main features of the piece; the white touch to the flower also symbolises the purity in the piece. Having the young boy positioned in between two old buildings highlights the contrast between the new creation of god and the old hand-made creations of people. Echuca was built in 1865 and exemplifies the contrast between the building from that time, the boy who was born in 2011 and juxtaposing the even younger rose who would be about 4 to 5 days old. Going through the different stages of life and showing how long god's creations and human creations last compared to each other. This Artwork shows all the new things that have been created in life.

In my artwork, I investigate the idea of rebirth and metamorphosis via Australia's constantly shifting landscapes. The painting depicts the meeting point of the coastal and outback environments illustrating the concept of ‘behold I make all things new’ and the cyclical nature of life. I encourage viewers to consider how different ecosystems coexist, each influencing the other in a never-ending cycle of rebirth by fusing these disparate regions into a single composition. The background is an image of the ocean that I took at Sandy Beach which served as inspiration. The waves constantly reshape the shore symbolising the renewal that comes with water. A dried eucalyptus tree and native plants on the other hand depict the arid Australian outback in the foreground signifying resiliency and regeneration even in adverse circumstances. This contrast highlights how nature has the capacity to transform as evidenced by the dry outback's ability to support new growth despite its apparent barrenness. I combine the dirt-red tones of the outback with coastal blues using acrylic paint to represent the union of two natural forces. Inspired by Ted Dyer my use of depth and movement immerses the spectator in the scene inspiring awe and a sense of presence. Ultimately, my art celebrates the dynamic and timeless beauty of Australia's landscapes which embodies the theme of renewal.

This painting alludes to deep and difficult feelings. It's not uncommon to feel distant from God or to struggle with motivation and emotional strain, especially as a Yr12 student when there seems to be no time for consistent quiet time with God. No time to reconnect and find renewal. My artwork speaks to those quiet moments were I can seek solace, gain perspective, and find strength to face our challenges. God is always there, even in my most LAZY moments; GOD renews me and gives me strength. This spiritual renewal can help centre my thoughts and emotions. This artwork reminds me that it’s okay to take small steps and be gentle with myself. Each small act of self-care can also be a spiritual act which for me contributes to a greater sense of peace and purpose. “The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need. “He lets me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters. In this painting, I seek to capture the sense of renewal and transformation that resonates with the theme, "Behold, I make all things new." The horizon line of the ocean serves as a powerful symbol of new beginnings and boundless potential. Here's a glimpse into the intention behind the work. My piece is carefully curated with the thoughts of inspiring many to connect with the horizon. The horizon line is something that can symbolise a limitless expanse of opportunities or a reflection of new beginnings for the future. It evokes the idea of how nature is infinite within our world, that nature is always growing and changing. Further fostering the feeling of how know one is perfect. The colours of the piece had the intention to be calming, revealing how nature is an important aspect within my life and reflected upon my own works. The colours change the closer it gets to the horizon line nurturing the idea of how change is important for personal growth in our future.

Ascension explores the overwhelming and powerful aspect of a new perspective or beginning for oneself over a new stage of life. To provide the sense of an overwhelming and powerful feeling, I used a range of warm coloured oil paints to create a swirling effect of unity for the phoenix’s wing, contrasting it with a cooler gray temple shape. (The temple represents myself, as a connection to my own culture.) Where the phoenix lingers over the temple. Ascension mirrors the concept of a new perspective and new beginnings in one’s new stage in life. In a sense, creating an overwhelming and powerful effect lingering over ones past version of themselves. In the new perspective or beginning one might find themselves to have new morals, more mature, open minded and have learnt how to have better expectations of themselves from experiences. My work is influenced by how artist Chu Teh Chun depicts harmony between man and nature, however in my work it depicts the harmony and connection between a personal cultural identity and mythological stories.

This work is a resemblance of the concept that nature will always prevail in instances of lack of human intervention. Similarly to ‘Serene Submergence’ my artwork utilises nature and the core belief of a creator God, yet does it through the subject matter of overgrown house plants which have dominated what appears as an aged living space. This references the idea that God’s unique creation of the natural aspects of Earth overpower the material and industrial world once it’s given freedom to flourish as God intended. When considering this, I made visible the contrast between the dullness of the wood furnishing (which was a result of environmental exploitation), and the thriving, prosperous, new growth which endlessly arises from it’s previous restriction. I emphasised the beauty and calm of new, booming growth by implementing warm lighting to create a sense of comfort. In relation to the theme ‘Behold, I make all things new’ I consider this through the way God has created nature, and that he intended it to always grow new life and be restored no matter how restricted it once was. I see the embodiment of the theme through the composition of the overall natural world, and how it was specifically created by God to somewhat resemble God himself characteristically, hence why I correlate them both throughout my artworks.

My work is an overall resemblance of the healing aspects and serenity the natural world can provide to those who are feeling consumed by the world's pressures and standards. This overall references the core belief in the relationship between humanity and the natural world, indicated in the book of Genesis during the creation of humans. During this creation, humanity is given the gift of nature and ordered to be the stewards of it, caring for it such as God does. In this context, the water I used to submerge the figure is not only implied as one of the gifts of creation, but is also commonly seen as the Holy Spirit, the form of God in action on Earth. In relation, I have incorporated the use of pastel and vibrant colours which are not typically found in natural settings, in an attempt to replicate a dream-like feeling which can be visualised as a spiritual, sacred setting. When interpreting the theme “Behold, I make all things new”, I consider my interpretation as illustrating the true tranquillity of the intended relationship between humanity and nature, and that if one feels broken, with the assistance of God's presence throughout the environment, can feel restored where once empty and find a newly created perspective to life. .
